The Slothful Demon With No Talent for Nicknaming
Wednesday, Jan. 07, 2004

This is coming right on the heels of the last entry, but I felt as though the Dream of Jealousy box was stuffed full and that I couldn't fit anything that wasn't Dream of Jealousy related in there without some sort of bursting at the seams (bursting at the seems?) effect happening. So here is a miscellany of things that I wanted to point out:

About the Sushi Man crush: Soph rightly indicates that "Sushi Max" is a terrible nickname. She has therefore been charged with finding a new nickname by polling the international crowd in her lab. I find it lovely that she has such a panel of international experts at her fingertips. For example, when I was in deep lust with my Russian calculus TA, she went straight to the Russian scientist in her lab to ask for advice on how American women should deal with Russian men. And now that I am in deep crush with a Japanese-American sushi chef, she has a Japanese scientist in her lab with whom to consult.

Ah, science.

But in discussing the changing of the nickname, Soph brought up the fact that it should have to include some incarnation of the word "raw," a word that sounds so sexual that I don't think it applies to the boyish sushi chef (or that doesn't comfortably apply, or that I can't comfortably apply). I did think, for the briefest of seconds, of "raw-san," but that sounds like diner shorthand for something that you'd never want to put in your mouth.

Pause to root around in my Japanese-English dictionary. "Aisho" perhaps? Aisho which can mean a pet name or term of endearment, or affinity, congeniality. God, anything's better than Sushi Max, which sounds like some extreme sport involving raw fish.

Hmmm. Will have to think on it and wait for the Japanese consult's opinion.
