The Demon Who Wrangles Lunatics Sans Understanding
Wednesday, Jan. 07, 2004

There is no way, I don't think, for some people not to make everything that happens be about them. This is the mark of someone whose world is so small that they can't see possibilities and connections that don't include them. Or, alternatively, this is the mark of someone who is so insecure that they need to see only how people are attached to them. The curious thing is that, the tighter you hold on to something, the less you understand its true nature--and that something of course includes yourself. It seems that it is only when you start to learn how to let go of things--of expectations (even the expectation of understanding by letting go), of people--that you come to some understanding. That is the paradoxical nature of human relationships. You need some distance to how you are connected to what's closest to you, to gain perspective, to come to some understanding. You need also not to see some distance as rejection. You need also to see that what you come to understand about others, whether you want to believe it or not, applies to yourself.

I said once that walking away is like running away, only you do it in slow motion. But I was wrong about one thing. When you walk away, you have the opportunity to avoid--or accept and deal with--the element of panic that so often characterizes running away.

When I quoted from Colette, it was in reference to one lunatic who laid hands on me. But the other lunatic took it personally. What understanding can be gained from this event?

retreat or surrender
