The Demon Who Believes in The Lie
Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003

Going for the record: (Three entries in a single day. Don't you feel special?)

Evolution. That's the obsessive thought for the day. Darwin's theory of evolution and those who don't believe in it.

"You have to remember that a lot of those stories are myths."--said the day we went to the anthropology museum

Whose stories was he talking about? The Biblical stories that tell us that the world is four thousand or so years old? The stories that Darwin told us about finches to illustrate the most important idea in biology? Whose stories does he believe? Did he believe? Why did I not know this looking at his confused and tightened face? How could I not understand this from the hesitation in his voice, the care he took in phrasing his answer?

How could anyone seriously not believe in evolution? How could anyone believe that the stories that the church hands out are true? And yet, from the look on his face, I knew he didn't believe and wasn't going to admit to me that he didn't believe. What evidence would you believe if you didn't already? What makes more sense?

I felt sorry for him then, pulled in one direction by a lie, pulled in the other direction by the truth. I feel more sorry for him now. I don't know what he believes, but I know that what he believes probably conflicts with the truth, and how can one ever reconcile these things?
