thanksgiving day.

first, i must be the only american (of non-asian descent) on the planet to have natto on rice for thanksgiving dinner. seriously, i ate natto for dinner. along with some diet dr. pepper and an apple.

happy thanksgiving!

actually, i did have a slightly more traditional lunch at the restaurant where my brother works. today they were serving a thanksgiving buffet lunch for $9.99 including pie and drink, so i had a salad, some turkey and roast beef, green chile and beans, part of a slice of pumpkin pie, and coffee. oh yes, and some onion rings. three of them.

okay, while that's not so traditional, it comes closer than last year, when i was living in tokyo and i think i ate ramen for thanksgiving. and the year before? i had broiled chicken and broccoli. no, really. i remember. all three of my last thanksgiving meals were in restaurants, which doesn't say much for tradition's role in my life, does it?

traditional spanish-american thanksgiving in new mexico is not the traditional white thanksgiving y'all might be used to. no, a traditional spanish-american, new mexican thanksgiving usually means all the stuff you see in the commercials and in the movies (turkey and stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn and green beans, biscuits, pumpkin pie) but take all that and add it to all other stuff, the stuff that makes it all worthwhile (beans and red chile, posole, tortillas, enchiladas, salsa). that's thanksgiving in new mexico.

and i am thankful. i am thankful for all the wonderful thanksgivings with my grandma josie and my family, thankful for my brother and for david, thankful for a beautiful day. i am thankful. i am thankful for my health, thankful for fuji apples, thankful for natto. i am thankful. i am thankful. i am thankful.
