Gender Very early childhood: A child, a fist A mouthful of blood. A teddy bear, a red felt toungue a lie. A bicycle, a question laughing. Mother's kisses. Mother's favorite. Early childhood: A childhood, ghostlike, ocupying the same solid space as mine, only physical; a shared television, a yard, a bedroom for a time; a street, a mother, a father, a long hallway, eggs, a school, a sidewalk, things. And things not shared: favors, a different-feeling love, freedom, hugs, kisses, laps. Words I can't have. The safety I can't have. Night time. Edgelessness.And things: shoes to run in, pants to play in, short, unpullable hair, baseball bats, marbles, trucks, boxcars, cars, cars, cars dinosaurs science math loud voices and yelling clowning rough housing lost homework back talk badness trouble snot pictures of nakes women to own--catalogues of them--pages of them--stuffed under mattresses, into the backs of closets, glossy torn artificial leaves, fallen. Cousins who play more than school, babies, house, baseball, basketball, soccer, kickball, football balls, balls, balls shirtless, shameless, bicycles, pocket change pockets pocket money lawn mowers and money raking and money shoveled walks and money money crushable hats and unpunished selfishness scars dirt--even dirt ditches, crawdads, mud dogs, beetles, snakes, bugs BB guns broken birds and bottles empty fields, weeds freedom elemental un-paid-for, un-asked-for un-judged un-touched un-tainted freedom
