The heart with a mind of its own.

(Be present.)

The mind with a heart of its own.

(It's past.)

The dream that is your waking life.

(Go there now.)

Gender

Very early childhood:

A child, a fist
A mouthful of blood.
A teddy bear, a red felt toungue
a lie.
A bicycle, a question
laughing.
Mother's kisses.
Mother's favorite.

Early childhood:

A childhood, ghostlike, ocupying the same solid space as mine, only physical; a shared television, a yard, a bedroom for a time; a street, a mother, a father, a long hallway, eggs, a school, a sidewalk, things. And things not shared: favors, a different-feeling love, freedom, hugs, kisses, laps. Words I can't have. The safety I can't have. Night time. Edgelessness.

And things:

shoes to run in,
pants to play in,
short, unpullable hair,
baseball bats, marbles, trucks, boxcars,
cars, cars, cars
dinosaurs
science
math
loud voices and yelling
clowning
rough housing
lost homework
back talk
badness
trouble
snot
pictures of nakes women to own--catalogues of them--pages of them--stuffed under mattresses, into the backs of closets, glossy torn artificial leaves, fallen.
Cousins who play more than school, babies, house,
baseball, basketball, soccer, kickball, football
balls, balls, balls
shirtless, shameless, bicycles, pocket change
pockets
pocket money
lawn mowers and money
raking and money
shoveled walks and money
money
crushable hats and unpunished selfishness
scars
dirt--even dirt
ditches, crawdads, mud
dogs, beetles, snakes, bugs
BB guns
broken birds and bottles
empty fields, weeds
freedom
elemental
un-paid-for, un-asked-for
un-judged
un-touched
un-tainted
freedom

and loud music.
