The Demon With The Carp Tattoo (and The Incidentally Conjured Demon)
Monday, Feb. 09, 2004

A. What You Pay For:

There was an Aisho-san viewing last night with The Grrls: The Demon Who Always Does The Right Thing, The Demon Grrlfriend and Mayflower. They all give Aisho-san the Grrly Seal of Approval. And the Aisho-san? Well, he was being quite cute and boyish and we were talking for a bit as though we knew each other which prompted Mayflower to lean over at one point and say, "You sure know a lot about this guy." But she was also really accomodating, saying very loudly, "Well, now that John's engaged, I won't be able to set you up with him." (That's a HINT in case you didn't get it, Aisho-san.) And things like that. And The Grrlfriend? At one point she leaned over and said, "Act desperate and single." And I was, like, Who's Acting? The Demon said as we were leaving, "He likes you, Sublingua. He listens to everything you say. He laughs at your jokes." And I was like, "Demon, [insert information we've already been over here and here]." I want him to like me--

But the Aisho-san also finally asked me a few questions about myself: What I do for a living, when my birthday is, just general things like that. (And that last question prompted me to tell him that I was also 32 and would be 33 on my next birthday. He replied that I didn't look 32, that I looked more like 25--the lighting in the restaurant is very dim, I felt very Blanche DuBoise in A Streetcar Named Desire, passing myself off as...25 was it?--and that I certainly didn't act 32. I must've looked a bit shocked at that last statement, because he said quickly, "That's a compliment, Sublingua.") He told us about decorating his house in a traditional Japanese style (using his mother's furniture surplus) and about the penguin martini shaker he brought back with him from Japan. We joked about Viagra--the drug company I just interviewed with makes Viagra-- (and the Viagra commercials lasting only 30 seconds, which prompted him to make a "minute man" joke, the first off-color joke of the evening, during which he seemed to watch me very carefully to see my response.) After that, we talked about Janet Jackson's breast of course and I asked, "Didn't she pose for Playboy?" to which he replied, very quickly, "Yes." And then of course I had to tease him about that, and he came right back with how he had the Japanese version of the Jackson Playboy layout all strategically airbrushed and we talked about the pubic hair taboo in Japan. All in all, it was quite a fun evening.

The big reveal-ation by the Aisho last night was that he is the proud owner of a traditionally done carp tattoo on his back. I don't know what prompted him to share this with us, but it was part of a larger story about visiting a bath house in Japan with his teacher (Aisho-san doesn't call him sensei) who didn't know he had the tattoo. And of course I tried to get him to show it to us, told him that he had a row of tattoo'd women before him (which was true, all of us are tattoo'd with the exception of The Demon Who Always Does The Right Thing of course) but he wouldn't pull his shirt off in the restaurant. And me? I am so going to lay my hands on that tattoo before long. (Updated 6/27/04 to add: The carp tattoo? A lie. He claims to've said that he's planning on it. Right.)

B. What You Get:

And from the Stop Wishing On Eyelashes Files:

Ran into The Real, Essential Demon this morning. Almost. And again I did nothing, said nothing. And neither did he. My heart tried to beat it's way out of my chest, but I did nothing. And I still want him. I would still do almost anything--anything but talk to him apparently--to have him.

retreat or surrender
